ballpThe world’s biggest soccer ball is one that not even a giant could kick around, it is a 50 tonne football sculpture on the top of Telkom’s Lukasrand tower in Tswane.

Telkom has broken a world record by building a 50-tonne, soccer ball on top of the Lukasrand tower in Pretoria, the company said on Thursday.

Telkom’s Lukasrand tower is already indelibly etched against the Tshwane (Pretoria) skyline. This record-breaking effort has been officially recognised as a Guinness World Record in the category of “largest football sculpture’

Built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The soccer ball is 24 meters across and eight stories in height and was built in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The ball is made out of fibreglass shells that are mounted and supported on the inside with steel frames. It is larger than any structure of its kind in the country and the African continent.

All Parts of the Ball are Recyclable

According to the SABC, Telkom’s FIFA 2010 Tami Maghazi, said all parts of the ball are recyclable.

Maghazi said: “We believe the ball is special to us for branding purposes. We believe the skyline where it is sitting in Pretoria is very iconic because as you approach Pretoria this is what is going to greet you – that big ball sitting on top of Lukasrand. We believe this gives us a lot of presence because we are a supporter of the soccer game and certainly this shows commitment from us.”

Construction of a similar humungous football has also commenced atop Telkom’s Hillbrow Tower and is earmarked for completion towards the end of this year.

“By creating a large visual spectacle at the pinnacle of the Lukasrand and Hillbrow towers, Telkom is offering every citizen of, and visitor to Gauteng, an opportunity to share in the soccer frenzy that’s starting to envelope our country,” said Magazi on www.itnewsafrica
