Get Ready for the Final Draw at 7 pm (South African Time)

Posted by KAY-EL On December - 4 - 2009

1140525_largeThe day we have all been waiting for has arrived. The Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will take place this evening at 7pm (local time) at the International Convention Center in Cape Town.

Taking place on a huge wooden stage with a typically African backdrop, the Final Draw will be preceded by a ceremony featuring a series of speeches and a dazzling array of live music and dance performances.

32 Tiny Balls

Once the evening’s colourful entertainment is over, however, the audience’s attention will turn to four glass bowls containing 32 tiny little balls, which will carry the hopes and fears and dreams of millions of fans.

This final draw will be the last major event before the actual 2010 World Cup kicks off in June 2010.

World Cup Host Cities

Tonight we will know who plays whom and where the various teams will play. Coaches and team management will be able to finalise their living arrangements and those that have not done so yet will be able to confirm host cities.

Official World Cup Match Ball

For me, one of the more interesting events this evening will be the announcement of the Official Match Ball. We have been playing with the Adidas Kopanya – the Confederations Cup ball since that event.

Group of Death

Eish! And the legendary Group of Death? As underdogs, South Africans are hoping and praying that our national team, which hasn’t been performing well at all, will not only avoid the group of death, but will get a favourable draw. Maybe our lovely Oscar winner, Charlize Theron, will bring Bafana Bafana luck tonight.

How the Draw Could Play Out

According to Fifa .com Bafana Bafana are one of the seeded teams and will be in good company in Pot 1, where they will be joined by five former winners of the competition with 15 wins between them: Brazil (5), Italy (4), Germany (3), Argentina (2) and England (1). Completing the elite octet are Spain and Netherlands.

France and Uruguay, the two other former champions, will be feeling slightly more nervous about their prospects ahead of the big night. The illustrious duo only scraped their way into the finals at the last minute following close-fought play-off matches and subsequently find themselves in Pot 4 and 3 respectively.

Africa’s Hopes

In addition to the hosts, five other African teams will be hoping to avoid a tough draw to increase their chances of impressing on their home continent. Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria are all back in the finals after absences of varying lengths, while Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are both making immediate returns.

South African Fans of English soccer can look forward to seeing their heroes in action here in 2010 as the English team has just booked its place in next year’s World Cup finals with an inspired 5 -1 win over Croatia. (Two goals each from Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard and one from Wayne Rooney).

England Qualified With 24 Points

England have qualified with 24 points from their eight games. Croatia is second on 17 with one more match to play. They are ahead of Ukraine on 15 points, who have two matches to play after drawing 0-0 with Belarus on Wednesday.

Ghana Qualifies for 2010 World Cup

Ghana has become the first African team, besides South Africa, to qualify for the 2010 World Cup  after a 2 -0 defeat of Sudan and Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac became the second man from that country -in succession- to take the Black Stars  to the World Cup. Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien and Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari scored the goals.

This past weekend Tunisia remained the top team in Group B as Nigeria failed to overcome the North Africans in Abuja.

Egypt and Cameroon both won away from home to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

France vs Serbia 1-1

Serbia moved to within three points of the World Cup on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw at home to France, whose hopes of automatic qualification remain alive after a brave 10-man showing.

A Quarter of Qualifiers for 2010 World Cup are Known

A quarter of the 32 qualifying nations for the first 2010 FIFA World Cup to be staged in South Africa are now known, with Ghana joining Australia, Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, Korea DPR, Korea Republic and hosts South Africa.

madibamediumWe are so involved with the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa that we almost forget that September is going to be a big month for some of the teams who are playing important matches in the qualifiers.

World Cup Bafana Bafana 2010, a blogger from the UK, is writing some great blogposts  – looking ahead to the 2010 World Cup activity during September.

Why not also check out the Groups and Standing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and see if you can predict who will be the 31 teams besides South Africa who will be there at the final draw in Cape Town on 4 December.

2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup South Africa Volunteers Needed

Posted by KAY-EL On July - 20 - 2009

One of the exciting moments in the 2010 World Cup run- up has come – the call for volunteers! These are the invisible people who contribute so much to the spirit of  a huge  organization of this kind.

2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa (OC)  has started the drive to recruit 15 000 volunteers for next year’s showpiece tournament.

With 32 teams participating, an expected influx of 450 000 visitors and 64 matches across nine host cities in ten stadiums, the volunteers will play a vital role in assisting the OC to deliver a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Well  this is the blurb from their Fifa website and I’m not looking forward to see how they deal with the influx.

For the FIFA Confederations Cup alone – which was open to only South African residents – nearly 40 000 people applied for the 4 000 which shows you a few things:

  • There is a massive unemployment problem in South Africa
  • South Africans aren’t afraid to work
  • South Africans are sport mad
