Orlando Pirates retained the Telkom Charity Cup after they defeated Platinum Stars 4-2 on a penalty shootout after both teams were level 1-1 at full time in the final played at a cold and wet Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.
Platinum Stars were the Stars of the Day
For me the surprise of the day was the performance by Platinum Stars. First they knocked out the big spending Mamelodi Sundown 2 -0 then they came back a few hours later to almost snatch the game from the Sea Robbers, And I’m sure everyone will be talking about the dodgy penalty in the 68th minute, when the Bucaneers’ substitute Bennet Chenene looked like he was tripping over his own feet an Stars defender Raymond Seneo was adjudged by referee Buyile Gqubule to have fouled the Bucs winger inside his penalty area and there and then awarded a penalty which defender Rooi Mahamutsa netted to level the final.
OK, Pirates coach, Ruud Kroll says he fielded a very much second string line up for the final after the cracking derby against Amakhosi at midday, but it was close!
Watching soccer in a Durban pub before going to to the rugby - Bucs goal!
Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Derby
As for the Derby – I was watching in a pub in Durban – and like the Royal Bofokeng Stadium, the majority of the supporters around me were Kaizer Chiefs fans, so it was me and to other Pirates who flew the skull and cross bones flag and were happily victorious.
Chiefs Goal, two minutes after kick-off, was scored by Knowledge Musona, who turned in the box to beat Moeneeb Josephs from close range after Jose Torrealba had flicked on a long throw-in.
Both the Pirates strikers – Siphelele Mthembu and Katlego Mashego, were very much kept under wraps in the first half.
But Mashego made his mark in the game three minutes after the restart when he levelled matters with a well-taken goal from 15-yards out.
The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, before Bucs went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-4.
Buccaneers Penalty Shootout Success
All I can say is that the Buccaneers obviously practices their penalty shootouts after the disaster in Port Elizabeth and I must add that the Bucs goalkeeper, 28 year old Moeneed “Slim-Cat” Josephs is great at stopping penalty kicks.
So, after this match I came home to watch the rugby on TV and my new friends left dressed up in their Springbok Rugby Jerseys to go to the Stadium and cheer the Bok victory against New Zealand.
