German Website Wants Vuvuzelas Banned from 2010 World Cup

Posted by KAY-EL On July - 13 - 2009

petition

On the German website Vuvuzelas.org they kick off by explaining ”

“We do not want to change anyone’s culture or traditions! But in our opinion, blowing vuvuzelas for 90 minutes is just unsportsmanlike like blowing the whistle during each ball contact of the opponent. We want football with passion and creativity – on the ground and in the stadium. Therefore, we want – in the sense of all football fans and especially with your support – for a ban of vuvuzelas during World Cup 2009″ (sic)

And it looks like they are serious, there is a whole website Gegen Vuvuzelas – Pro Stimmung about Banning vuvuzelas from the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup – they even have a twitter page encouraging people to sign their petition it is called Gegen vuvuzelas which means “Against Vuvuzelas” and Pro Stimmung, ironically - Keep the Spirit.

Whose spirit, I ask? May I remind them that this is an African World Cup and just as we don’t insist on them banning lederhosen and wailing accordions from the Oktoberfest because it offends our aesthetic senses – they have no right to tell us what the “Spirit of the Game “ is, in our country and on our continent.

Wanna Take a Bet on Vuvus being Banned from the World Cup?

Well  just to throw some excitement into the pot for the gamblers,  Gibraltar based online gambling company Partybets.com (that promotes responsible online gambling, of course)  is offering odds on the chance of vuvuzelas being banned from world cup – not very big  odds- take a look.

At the moment their punter’s  favorites to win the World Cup are:

  • Brazil
  • Spain
  • Argentina
  • England
  • Italy

Germany seriously needs to back down now! The vuvuzela isn’t going anywhere! No matter how much they whine and complain over something so petty, just face it that the vuvuzela isn’t going away. They are acting like a five year old child at the grocery store crying because they wont get their own way. Well if they havent realised! Its not about them! South Africans celebrate footballin their own special and unique way and for them to say that it’s not creative is the funniest thing ive ever heard!!
Grow up and just accept other people’s cultures and ways of doings otherwise stay the ignorant people that you are,we really don’t care!

    Hi,
I’m from Germany and like the vuvuzela and of course respect it as a part of the South African football culture. I have to say that I find it weird that some people like Sam obviously think that this website reflects the opinion of most of the Germans. As far as I know only ten people have signed this ridiculous petition so far and not even all of them are from Germany. You shouldn’t even link these guys to give them unnecessary publicity. I would probably have never heard of them if I had not seen your blog post.
Looking forward to a great World Cup in a great Country and to hear the vuvuzela on the German TV. :-)
    Cheers

Afternoon, quite a good post, I have book marked your page ;)

  4. Sorry for maybe sounding a little uneducated, but what is Vuvuzelas? Is it a place in South Africa? or a Manager?

  5. Mabileau says:

Lot’s of people from all over the world wants the vuvu to be banned from the match. And only from the match.

Well i believe now that the rest of the world, including me, is learning about the annoyzela, there will be even a stronger push for a ban in the remaining games of the WC. I respect any country and their culture, but unlike what you say, it’s not south african world cup, you don’t own it and above all, you don’t have the right to destroy it for the rest of the world. You were given the privilege by the rest of the football world to host the biggest event after the olympics, and what do we get in return, the most god awful sound one can imagine for the full 90 minutes. By all means, blow your annoyzela all you like for your league or whatever games you might be having, but don’t ruin the world cup.

  7. KAY-EL says:

This World Cup is an African World Cup. We welcome the world to our country. We have worked and have sacrificed to host this tournament. You have a choice – stop moaning and enjoy the games – if you notice, it is not just South Africans blowing vuvuzelas. Sainsburys in the UK have sold out of 40 000 vuvuzelas for the game today, by the way. I attach the Guardian’s report on the opening ceremony.
And may I point out to you, that you are not “the rest of the world”.

  8. An Ti Sam says:

    Sam…
    you call me ignorant?
you think, yo can talk about the african culture?
vuvuzelas are an export from china. they are so cheap, that also the poorest peaple can buy them. so they do…

  9. Jan says:

The Vuvuzela definitely destroys most of the atmosphere in the WorldCup – how I wil remember this World Cup? TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT……

  10. Jay82 says:

Kay-El I believe that money and a lot of it was given to your country to help build stadia to host World Cup. Your wonderful hotels have quadrupled the price of hotels e.g. one I stayed in last year for £35 is now £150 per night BIG RIP OFF.

NOTE tickets did not sell out so the prices are low for your people but high for everyone else. The infrastructure to get around is also very poor and last night around 1000 people were left outside of stadium when park and ride buses did not turn up.

Keep the Vuvuzela for South African games only and dont spoil the rest with that awful noise.

  11. Thanks for this article. There are definitely tips in here that I will use.

  12. Typical South African football chants:
    Goal scored: “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
    Opponents score: “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
    Bad call made: “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
Free kick from a good position: “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
    Absolutely nothing happening: “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”

    LOL
    South Africa is a joke…

  13. Hans Graf says:

Simply inacceptable. Actually spaniard’s flags “why don’t you shut up” are just a racist incitement. They should be banned. The Western culture SILENCED, with the help of weapons and religion, many cultures all around the world. Even according to THEIR music points of views, considering those from the colonizated cultures as “infernal noises”, “barbarisms”, against their “celestial harmony”. You have no good memory, Spaniards and Europeans! YES to ban those flags full of racism! YES to the vuvuzelas!
