On the German website Vuvuzelas.org they kick off by explaining ”
“We do not want to change anyone’s culture or traditions! But in our opinion, blowing vuvuzelas for 90 minutes is just unsportsmanlike like blowing the whistle during each ball contact of the opponent. We want football with passion and creativity – on the ground and in the stadium. Therefore, we want – in the sense of all football fans and especially with your support – for a ban of vuvuzelas during World Cup 2009″ (sic)
And it looks like they are serious, there is a whole website Gegen Vuvuzelas – Pro Stimmung about Banning vuvuzelas from the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup – they even have a twitter page encouraging people to sign their petition it is called Gegen vuvuzelas which means “Against Vuvuzelas” and Pro Stimmung, ironically - Keep the Spirit.
Whose spirit, I ask? May I remind them that this is an African World Cup and just as we don’t insist on them banning lederhosen and wailing accordions from the Oktoberfest because it offends our aesthetic senses – they have no right to tell us what the “Spirit of the Game “ is, in our country and on our continent.
Wanna Take a Bet on Vuvus being Banned from the World Cup?
Well just to throw some excitement into the pot for the gamblers, Gibraltar based online gambling company Partybets.com (that promotes responsible online gambling, of course) is offering odds on the chance of vuvuzelas being banned from world cup – not very big odds- take a look.
At the moment their punter’s favorites to win the World Cup are:
- Brazil
- Spain
- Argentina
- England
- Italy

Germany seriously needs to back down now! The vuvuzela isn’t going anywhere! No matter how much they whine and complain over something so petty, just face it that the vuvuzela isn’t going away. They are acting like a five year old child at the grocery store crying because they wont get their own way. Well if they havent realised! Its not about them! South Africans celebrate footballin their own special and unique way and for them to say that it’s not creative is the funniest thing ive ever heard!!
Grow up and just accept other people’s cultures and ways of doings otherwise stay the ignorant people that you are,we really don’t care!
Hi,
I’m from Germany and like the vuvuzela and of course respect it as a part of the South African football culture. I have to say that I find it weird that some people like Sam obviously think that this website reflects the opinion of most of the Germans. As far as I know only ten people have signed this ridiculous petition so far and not even all of them are from Germany. You shouldn’t even link these guys to give them unnecessary publicity. I would probably have never heard of them if I had not seen your blog post.
Looking forward to a great World Cup in a great Country and to hear the vuvuzela on the German TV.
Cheers
