I was really happy when I saw a tweet from FIFAWorldcupSA of a post by The Real Footie Analyst that confirmed my feelings about this issue, that Fifa would not ban the Vuvuzela from the 2010 Soccer World Cup, in spite of the grumblings about noise from mainly European TV commentator and groupings of local dissenters.
According to this blog, which is regarded as a go-to place for all things football :
FIFA have ruled out any action that would remove the vuvuzela from the stadiums at the 2010 World Cup.
And more
“We approach this in a relaxed manner. I am convinced the vuvuzelas will be a hit at the World Cup. It will be a World Cup with African sound,” Hans Klaus, director of communications at FIFA, told reporters on Friday.
Popularity: 9% [?]

Comment on Hans Klaus’ words: It will be a World Cup with African NOISE!! Not sound. Nothing other than the dissonance of the continuous blowing of vuvuzelas.
There would have been no issue, were the South African soccer population used their stadium horns to express celebrations for a goal or good play. But this is not the case, as the “blowers” make noise throughout the match due to lack of respect to the game and other supporters.
Make no mistake, some people are for the vuvuzela in keeping a South African flavour to the game, but this World Cup will be spoiled for the vast majority of supporters and viewers worldwide.
Yours sincerely,
a concerned supporter of World Cup success in South Africa
I really liked your blog! I have bookmarked it! Keep up the good work!
that is the some of the worst fucking news I’ve ever heard. Those vuvu’s are some of the most annoying things ever invented.
Fifa world cup is around the corner and I will highly appreciate everybody on this blog if they can tell me where to buy world cup tickets.
Great web site and thanks for the details. It seems to be pretty hard to locate the world cup shirts in the US. Most stores don’t have them. The web seem to be a great spot to be a get them.
The vuvuzela is the single most irritating instrument on the face of the earth. I will never go to a soccer match in SA because of this annoying peace of crap.
The Vuvuzela is more than just an annoying and irritating…it is sound pollution in the highest grade AND it defiles the spiritual atmosphere! It is the call of ancestral spirits! South Africa does NOT need such evil! NOT NOW …NEVER! I am absolutely against it and so are MANY according to the BAN THE VUVUZELA web site http://www.banvuvuzela.com/
Vuvuzelas need a BAN as soon as possible. It makes people turn the volume off on the tv. Southafricans are annoying the whole world with their noise and it looks like they don’t realise it.
BAN VUVUZELAS!!!!!!!!!! BAN BAN BAN BAN HORRIFIC NOISE THAT KILLS FOOTBALL
It may kill football for you, but for us it is part of football – nobody is going to ban the vuvuzela- so just enjoy the games – tune it out like traffic noise if you don’t like it.
With all do respect South Africans…vuvuzelas noise “kills” the pulse of the football game. On TV it sounds really horrible.
We dont want to Europeanize the 2010 World Cup but at least to enjoy it with you. Thanks
It is amazing how a man in his position thinks thoses vuvu whatever will become for the good of the game!! I dont think anyone in the word on TV can watch a whole game with this horrible noise destroying the worldcup!!! so pleeeeeeeeeeeeease ban it.
Everyone keeps mentioning about respecting South Africa’s culture….but what about respecting WORLD CUP’S CULTURE it’s customs, that sensational feeling of shouting and singing on for your favorite football team. Now with the annoyingly buzzing bee-like sound of the trumpet we no longer hear the singing or the shouting nor feel that same excitement of watching a football game.
Gawd!! world cup happens once in 4 years, why wont u just let us enjoy it.
you ppl say its part of ur football culture, but what ur doing is taking away the world cups culture, you see if we tune it out or MUTE IT then ur disrespecting the world cup. Selfish ppl!!!
I’m watching the England USA match right now. Maybe 20% of the people in the stadium are South African Look at the fans – the English and USA fans, they all have vuvuzelas. And no matter what you say, the vuvuzelas are here to stay – we are only on day two.
That’s the point. We’re only on day two and I am sick and tired of that Vuvu-crap-thing-noise already.. I walked through town today and during World Cup normally you can hear TV’s from every angle with the usual football cheer. Not this time! All TVs on mute or as low as possible and people scratching their heads.. It’s gonna be a VERY, VERY SAD WORLD CUP for everyone who’s not South African.
I feel sorry for any soccer fans who have spent good money going all the way to SA to experience the stadium atmosphere and instead of atmosphere have this hideous noise inflicted upon them for the duration of their games. At least staying at home the TV feed can mute it out. What disrespect for players and fans at matches not involving South Africa. Like allowing your children blow horns in the ears of your dinner guests all evening.
Why don’t you ask all the fans who are here what it is like? They seem pretty happy to me … maybe it is because most of them now have their own vuvuzelas!
Bob I suggest that the people in your town sing their football songs or shake rattles or hold up big foam fingers or do whatever you do at football to cheer you all up – the World Cup is a celebration of football and of diversity – just because it isn’t being done your way, doesn’t mean it is wrong or bad – as we say her in SA go with the flow bru!
I really hope that Fifa reconsider this when people begin to fill hospitals and clinics with auditive injuries. I was really happy with south africa hosting this world cup, but this is too much. There’s no need. And the biigest problem is just starting…
Don’t be so dramatic – we have had vuvuzelas for years at our football matches and there has never been a reported “auditive injury” . In any case, people can always buy ear plugs.
I’m not being dramatic,
You can find out the number of decibels emitted by the horn and human tolerance to that noise. It is not difficult to realize it.
I totally understand that is part of your culture and your way to enjoy football, but is also dangerous for other people not accustomed. In addition, the number of people who now cause noise is not comparable to what has been seen before.
Thanks anyway for your opinion. Take care.
Not more than 5 matches have been played so far and nearly the hole world is totally upset with SA hosting the World Cup as billions of TV spectators hear nothing else than the annoying and monotonous sound of the vuvuzela.
4 years ago Germany hosted a brilliant World Cup following the slogan “A time to make friends” and they did make friends!
What’s South Africa’s slogan for 2010? “A time to make the world pissed of with yourself”? Be sure that you will do so!
And in a few weeks SA will not be remembered as a friendly host of the World Cup but as it’s murderer!
Please ban the vuvuzelas, they are ruining the World Cup
You must be German Stefan.
I don’t see unhappy people in the stadiums, do you? And most of them aren’t South African.
A good host wouldn’t want his guests uncomfortable. A guest that is made to endure folklore, that is obviously not his thing, will not come again. Please ban the vuvuzela’s, you have plenty left to offer
Ban those irritating trumpets, they add NOTHING to the world cup, in fact they are RUINING it.
And don’t bother giving me any of that ‘culture’ crap either.
Never ever have the World Cup in SA EVER AGAIN!
I really hate that damn trumpet.
My first WC on my plasma and it had to be ruined by a GIANT BEE sound.
I had to force myself to watch the USA game, the noise, the bloody noise. Can someone please put up a channel that just has the commentator and no horrible constant buzz buzz buzz. I am not going to bother with watching another game till I see one with NO NOISE publicised. Hans made a big mistake. If there were no noises allowed, the game would still go one, with the noise, the game is ruined for many.
S.A. has probably made sure that no African country will EVER be allowed to host the World Cup again. As many others have said why can’t the broadcasters put a filter on their sound feeds so that true football fans can hear the real “football” atmosphere of the game and the over-excited locals can get on with making their stupid noises
I’m sorry about saying “stupid noises”, “what they are used to doing” would have been a more measured figure of speech. But this noise really spoils the World Cup for the rest of us!
Ban those idiotic things, the game must be muted due to them! Be sure SA that this will have an impact on attendance and hosting future games.
This INTERNATIONAL game is ruined by this irrititating blowjob they do:)
If I want to get scr*wed I would like to choose myself by whome but this is just pure rape!!!
Africans are incredibly sensitive to criticism, hasn’t anyone noticed? It’s not about culture or atmosphere or any of that. It’s all about showing the rest of the world the middle finger! I hope FIFA not makes a decision to ban these fuckuzelas soon. If the culture of South Africa comes from the ass-end of a plastic party-crapper and you think it adds something to your life, you’re a moron. What you are displaying is not culture, but a mindless, childish, “watch how fucking loud I play my toy” mentality.
FIFA should ban the vuvuzela. It’s monotone, annoying sound that kills the atmosphere. Also I noticed that those people don’t event watch the game or cheer any team, they just blow this annoying thing (OK, some of them were dancing).
All I can see is that they are not interested in football at all.
What you get with vuvuzela:
1. Your team scores – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
2. Another team scores – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
3. Your guy gets the red card – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
4. there is a fight between players – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
5. your team attacks – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
6. oponnent team attacks – all you can hear is BZZBZBBBBBZBZZZZZZZZZZZZ
So what’s the point? Just don’t give me that “that’s our culture” thing, because we have tradition of throwing big stones of the shoulder but we don’t do it on the football games.
Join the facebook group BAN THE VUVUZELA !
The noise from these plastic trumpets is completely ruining the World Cup 2010 for me. There is no enjoyment listening to this noise as it has completely removed the atmosphere that football games normally feature. Football is about the fans and the emotions they show by singing, shouting and applauding is what defines the game. Now all you hear is UUUUUUHHHH!! The sound of thousands of uncoordinated vuvuzela’s making noise. Infuriating!
This is not culture, this is madness.
“Oh, so you’d like to stab my ear with a 5-inch ice pick? Oh no thank you, I’d rather pass. OH? It’s your culture?! Well bloody hell! Go right ahead then.”
this is the reason the world cup should never have gone to south africa in the 1st place! – All it does is annoy everyone – last night watched the germany game with the sound virtually off – don’t really want to watch games like this but there is no other way – having to endure 90 minutes of the mindless drone is just not on – can’t africans sing? – why did this useless bit of plastic catch on – oh and please ban this from the english leagues right now!
To be fair, from the pictures on TV of the crowds, it looks like many visitors are lustily blowing away on fuckuzelas as well. It’s not only the locals. The whole thing is out of control and FIFA (how much are they making from the fuckuzela as symbol of the world cup?) will do nothing to ban it. The more people complain about it, trust me, the harder these assholes are going to blow. When Africa thinks it is being criticised, rightly or wrongly, it reacts: Colonialism, racism, white arrogance, etc. This is fine, as long as they realise that this will be the last event for a very long time going Africa’s way. I hope Bafana plays well. I wouldn’t want to see a pissed-off supporter holding a fuckuzela.
I am ashamed if people from other countries say that the vuvuzela is a South African culture thing. This idiotic horn has nothing to do with the South Africa culture. It might be the culture of the stupid brain dead people who blows the vuvuzela but not the culture of everybody in our country. Please ban this idiotic instrument from the games.
Football should not be defined from the point of view of few non-Africans on this blog. Who said football pitches are a place for spectators to sing at the top of their voices? What makes a difference, and who should set the standards for what spectators can and cannot do?
I braced myself for some kind of hate attitude from the visitors, for them to at least point to something they will hate World Cup South Africa for. If FIFA has approved the vuvuzela, then who is everyone else? The game is celebrated differently in all parts of the world. This is how it is celebrated in South Africa.
Players hate it…
Managers hate it…
The Media hate it…
The fans hate it…
TV viewers hate it…
SA will be remembered as the WORST World Cup ever.
Just watching the New Zealand v Slovakia game now and the stadium is mainly empty…wonder why that is…
thank god, i didn’t buy any tickets for the WC when i could. The audience ambient sounds should be about singing and cheering. Not about who has the biggest horn and who can blow the hardest. Maby the vuvuzela blowers could help with sucking all the oil in the USA?
I am a South African and when it was announced that we would host the world cup,the future of this country looked bright. This instilled a sense of pride among all South Africans. These irritating horns have, however, made me somewhat embarrassed to be South African and my previous pride has been reduced to shame. I am also not alone. Everyone I have asked (all of whom are South African) agree with me.The climatic events within football games such as goals, red cards and penalties need to be emphasized with commensurate cheering. This distinction is lost when a homogeneous horn is blown for the entire 90 minutes! FIFA and spectators alike should support football tradition and Ban these Godforsaken Vuvuzelas!
I have to be honest and say the Vuvuzela is the most irritating noise ever . I’m pretty sure most football stadiums are designed with acoustics in mind . What is the point in S A spending all that money to then drown out the World cup of all its atmosphere with a single one note noise.
Football and especially the World cup is all about the fans throughout the whole world . Whats the point if you cant hear them ? All i hear is a stupid buzzing sound and the only game i fully watched is my national side the whole way through . Some other games i really wanted to watch – Italy vs Paraguay for example i was so put off the best i could do was switch to check the scores here and there . Same for Brazil tonight , the constant drone bugged me and my wife so much we turned over .
Worst world cup ever glad i didnt waste money on tickets etc .
FIFA are driven by money.
Boycott the WC sponsors such as Coca Cola, McDonald’s and Budweiser, the Vuvuzela will soon be banned.
Busy watching the SA v Uruguay game – did anyone notice…
when Uruguay scored the Vuvuzelas went SILENT!!!!
GOOD!!!
For the first I could hear the crowd ROAR!!!!
More goals against SA!!!
Lets hope they get lose this match because they WILL NOT beat France and the bye bye SA!!!!
Hopefully then we will get REAL football instead of this Vuvuzela CRAP!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
MORE SILENCE AS THE SA KEEPER GETS SENT OFF!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
URUGUAY SCORE THE PENALTY!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
BYE BYE AND DON’T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR TRUMPETS WITH YOU!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
KARMAS A BITCH EH!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
These God-forsaken trumpets of evil are killing the atmosphere of every game. More to the point, if you happen to be watching it on television at home they have the real effect of sending me to sleep. My brain is obviously trying to escape their sheer noise. I hope the English supporters can drown them out with some good old singing.
Looks more or less unanimous to me. They ruin the atmosphere and have nothing to do with SA football culture. I’m not disputing the fact that they’re an African _musical instrument_. This racket is not musical. They’ve been popular in SA football games for just over a decade as far as I can tell, which doesn’t make them a traditional cultural phenonemon, just an annoying fad. Other commentators here are right that world sporting institutions will be booed off the pitch if they ever again suggest SA as a venue. And look at the pictures of people blowing them – they aren’t watching the game, they just want to make a noise.
