Serbia National Football Team – The White Eagles

Posted by KAY-EL On August - 10 - 2009

I thought I should take a quick look at the Serbia National Football Team, the White Eagles, who are due to meet Bafana Bafana in a friendly in Pretoria on Wednesday 12 August.

Well Serbia’s Home stadium is Stadion Crvena Zvezda, Belgrade and their Head coach, Radomir Antic.  According to Oleole, their top goal scorer is Savo Milošević with 35 goals.

Serbia National Football Team

The Serbia national football team was previously known as the Yugoslavia national football team until February 2003 and the Serbia and Montenegro national football team until June 2006 when Serbia declared independence as the successor state to the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. It was renamed the Serbia national football team on 28 June 2006.

On August 16, 2006 the new team, representing Serbia played its first international match, with a 3-1 away win against the Czech Republic.

Serbia Participated in 10 FIFA World Cup Competitions

Serbia came fourth in 1930 and 1962 in the FIFA World Cup and has made 10 appearances. At present Serbia are at the top of their Group 7,  2010 FIFA World Cup group with 18 points from seven matches -  eight ahead of 2006. According to Fifia. com France is tipped as the winner of the group with Romania next. Serbia is the outsider :

Serbia, who are competing in an international tournament for the first time on their own, having separated from Montenegro last year, enjoyed an impressive qualifying campaign for the European Championships and only lost two of their 14 games, finishing on 24 points, four behind group winners Poland and three behind Portugal. Serbia’s competitiveness was shown by the fact that they remained unbeaten in all four games against the two group principals; their only defeats coming away to Belgium and Kazakhstan.

The Serbia Squad has been reshuffled ahead of their World Cup qualifier with France next month. According to Yahoo News Canada, Coach Antic

… left out wingers Bosko Jankovic and Miralem Suljemani, captain Dejan Stankovic and Nenad Milijas.

And included uncapped goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic as well as midfielders Radosav Petrovic and Marko Milinkovic for the match against the 2010 World Cup hosts.

Richard Henyekane, new inclusion in Bafana Bafana team.

The announcement was made without Bafana Bafana head coach Joel Santana who is ill with Pneumonia and bronchitis in his home country and is not allowed to travel. Assistant coaches Jairo Leal and Pitso Mosimane on Thursday announced the squad to face Serbia in a friendly international.

The match will take place at the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday, 12 August 2009. Kick-off is 19h00

According to the Premier League website,  in announcing the team, the Bafana Bafana technical staff emphasized the need to keep the same team for the match against Serbia. “We don’t have much time to prepare for this match – just two days, so it was important to keep the same base from the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup squad where we had more than one month with the players.

Newstoday noted that top scorer Benjamin Parker is not in the line-up. “We were informed that Parker has an injury. Therefore we could not select him for this match,” assistant coach Jairo Leal said.

Richard Henyekane – only New Player

Richard Henyekane is the only new player that has been selected for the team. “We have been working on the team for three years,” Leal continued explaining why Henyekane deserved an invite. Even though the door is open to new players, “it is not open too much” he added.

Bafana Bafana assemble on Sunday night in Pretoria. They will train on Monday afternoon at the Pilditch Stadium while on Tuesday afternoon they will round off their preparations for the Serbia match at the Super Stadium.

MTN 8 Wafa Wafa Wednesday Night Results

Posted by KAY-EL On August - 6 - 2009

Ajax Cape Town beat Orlando Pirates 2 –1 in a tough MTN 8 quarter final at Ellis Park last night (August 5) while at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwa Qwa, Golden Arrows beat Free State Stars 1-0.

Goals:
Ajax Cape Town: Thulani Sereno, Dipsy Selolwane
Orlando Pirates: Katlego Mashego

Golden Arrows: Musa Bilankulu
Free State Stars: nil

This sets up an exciting MTN 8 Semi final line up of Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Ajax Cape Town, Golden Arrows.

Ajax are Pirates Voodo Team

The Buccaneers seem to always struggle with the Urban Warriors. Bucs also failed to beat Ajax in the league last season, losing at home and drawing their return match in Cape Town. Ajax also defeated Pirates 2-1 in the Telkom Knockout final last season. Ajax Cape Town just seem to be Orlando Pirates voodoo side.

Two Durban Clubs closer to R8 milliom

It is great to see two Durban-based clubs in the semi-finals for this R8 million MTN 8 Wafa Wafa prize.  Kaizer Chiefs is the only Top 14 side left.
